A DIGITAL NEW DEAL
In the era of digitalization, legislation must be adapted to protect and safeguard fundamental rights such as privacy, freedom of expression, and the right of people to create, use, publish, and access digital media as well as electronic devices and communications networks.
With advancements in technology, the expansion of network infrastructure, and digital databases brimming with knowledge and information, it is unethical for some regions and households to be unable to afford or participate within these high-speed networks. In Congress, Alexandra will fight to ensure that every single household in the U.S. states and territories has high-speed broadband access and find it affordable.
CYBERSECURITY AND PRIVACY
Individuals have the right to cybersecurity and privacy. Alexandra will fight to pass legislation that requires consent for the collection and processing of data, provides clear information on how data is processed, sets limits on the use of automated data processing for decision making, protects the right to transfer data from one service provider to another, makes it easy for anyone to access their own personal data, and protects the right of a person to rectify or delete data (the right to be forgotten). In Congress, Alexandra will reject bills such as the EARN IT Act that threaten cybersecurity, privacy, and free speech.
RIGHT TO REPAIR
Right to repair is necessary for consumers, small businesses, the environment, and the global economy. Alexandra will fight for legislation to promote consumer choice and competition by requiring manufacturers of digital electronic equipment to make available to owners and independent repair providers, on fair and reasonable terms, the documentation, parts, and tools used to diagnose, maintain, and repair such equipment and as a result, reduce e-waste that is devastating our planet’s oceans.
Internet service providers must treat all Internet communications equally and not discriminate or charge differently based on user, content, website, platform, application, type of equipment, source, destination address, or method of communication. In Congress, Alexandra will fight for net neutrality so that internet service providers cannot intentionally block, slow down, or charge money for specific online content. Without net neutrality, an internet service provider can prioritize certain types of traffic, meter others, or even block traffic from specific services while charging consumers for various tiers of service.
THE ETHICS OF BIG TECH AND MISINFORMATION
Big Tech companies have demonstrated they cannot be trusted to self-regulate. Misinformation, conspiracy theories, lies and hate speech are a threat to our democracy and promote extremism that threaten the safety of marginalized communities – the January 6th insurrection is an example of the harm lack of information regulation can cause. Big Tech must prioritize people over profit and be accountable for hate speech and misinformation promoted on their platform. Alexandra will fight for legislation that holds Big Tech accountable for hate speech and misinformation existing on digital platforms. Alexandra would also fight for legislation to pass antitrust laws applicable to Big Tech and break up tech giants’ monopolies.
THE RIGHTS OF DIGITAL CREATORS
In the era of digitalization, “content creators” are becoming a career path for many people. Digital creators have rights to online platforms and freedom of speech. In Congress, Alexandra would repeal SESTA/FOSTA and fight for legislation that would secure and protect the rights of users to digital platforms for online work, online sex work, brand promotion, and small businesses. The rights of digital creators to a platform go hand in hand with net neutrality and Alexandra would fight any legislation pushing digital creators off online platforms and censoring users.
